How to Prepare for the College Search High school students have a lot going on already, but when you add on the big college search, its hard for a student not to find life extremely overwhelming. This is one giant process that requires a lot of guidance, so it is critical that a student really understands what theyre getting into before taking on this life-changing project. It cannot be treated as something they will coast their way through or just occasionally check on. The college search should be an extremely organized endeavor that you are keeping up with every day and giving very careful attention to. Of course, this takes us back to the overwhelming aspect. How can a high school student get through this successfully without getting completely freaked out? Well, that is why beginning this process way ahead of time is so important. Far too many students leave this search until early senior year, which frankly, is nowhere near enough time to make informed decisions on which schools youd like to attend. Yes, this is a good time to literally get your applications in, but you should have your choices picked out and researched well before then. Waiting too long will not only drastically limit your time to complete your applications successfully, it will put unnecessary extra pressure on you to make a decision quickly too quickly. Having to choose a school in a rushed manner is one of the worst positions a student can be in. So why wouldnt you start looking into this far ahead of time? This is one of the biggest decisions of a young students life, and one of the most exciting; there should be no reason you wouldnt want to begin looking into this very early on. One of the most important ways to guarantee an easier time deciding between your future acceptance letters is to make sure you are only applying to schools you know you would love to attend. Perhaps there is a school that you love everything about, but that also requires an ACT score above what you have. Giving yourself a chance to shoot up that score will benefit you greatly youll be very let-down if you find you have no chance of getting into that school just because you didnt think about requi red test scores earlier on in high school. If you dont research various colleges requirements early on, you wont know what youre reaching for as you go through your high school career. Once youve given yourself enough time to know what kinds of scores, grades, and clubs you must incorporate into your life, you must also use this time to determine which schools actually offer the things you want personally. Visit the campuses, read review books, research the websites, set up meetings with admissions counselors treat every approach to a school as if you are going to be enrolling in them tomorrow. Get a hold of every aspect of this schools culture that matters to you so you dont waste your time applying to a place that wouldnt really make you happy. In the end, you need to apply to schools that you know would be a fit for you and that you would have a solid chance of getting into. The worst thing you can do is waste your time with places that you are absolutely sure wont work out in either of those areas. This isnt to say that you should unnecessarily limit yourself; dont be afraid to apply to a university you love that may require a slightly higher GPA than you have. Remember, most college admissions officers look at applications holistically, so never write off your chances completely if there is just one tiny factor that doesnt perfectly match up with your qualifications. And finally, never apply to a school just because you feel like you should or because your best friend is. You will be very unhappy later if you end up at a school that you were told you would like, but dont actually like once you get there. In the end, this school is for you and you only. This is why you must look into everything yourself with a very meticulous approach and then decide on your own if you like it. You really cant avoid the exhausted feelings that will come out of this search. Any typical high school student will be inclined to skip over some of these steps and assume theyll be fine. But with enough time set aside and enough belief that this will pay off wonderfully later, this search can be completed with all the attention it deserves and leave you ultimately satisfied.

You also have the tools you need to make your first pattern.It is now time to put everything together.Earlier, we mentioned you do not need to be an artist to make clothing patterns. Now is the time to prove our point.You will use an assortment of guides â€" the straightedge, square and French curve you bought, to draw your pattern.Place your slope under your paper so you will know how long to draw the skirt and how to draw the bodice.Now, add embellishment: if you want your dress to have a square neck, you may use your L-square to draw precise angles. If you want the skirt to be pleated, you only need to draw vertical lines from the waist to the hem.And so it goes: if you want cuffed sleeves, draw them in. If you are making a wrap dress pattern, don’t forget to draw in the sash.Once you have your dress completely drawn, it is only a matter of making each pattern piece. Don’t forget to incorporate a 5/8 inch seam allowance!You should end up with at least 2 skirt pieces (front and back), a waistband (unless you are sewing a tunic dress), and 2-3 pieces for the bodice, depending on whether you want it to button.You may also have a collar or neckline piece and you may need some interfacing for your collar. Even when there is a maid or other professional cleaner who comes to clean it regularly, you have to avoid making a big mess because this is enough reason for significant tension to crop up with your colleagues. Same goes for the messes of others within reason, of course. It’s better to wipe up the coffee spill or throw away the piece of trash than to start drama over something very small. 4. Don’t Hog the Fridge There is enough space in the fridge for everyone, but there might not be room for everything. (Like this thought? Tweet it!) The space in the refrigerator in the office kitchen is limited, and this could potentially create a conflict among the people in the office. Only store things in the fridge that you plan to eat immediately and only put things in the fridge that really need to be kept cold. 5. Don’t Pick Fights Dont provoke your colleagues and don’t respond to the bait they throw your way, either. The stressful environment of work can easily make you more susceptible to provocations, especially when you’re already dealing with some tension with a colleague who just happens to need a coffee refill at the same time you do. There is no need for more tension, so just try to ignore any provocations. This will save you a lot of troubles and the peace in your office will be preserved. 6. Leave It How You Found It Leave the kitchen in the same state of order and cleanliness it was in when you walked in. Some people think that since they are not at home, they aren’t obliged to perform any kind of cleaning or organizing. The kitchen in your office needs as much cleaning and cares as the one in your home. The major cleaning and disinfection may still be the responsibility of the cleaning staff, but you simply must clean up after yourself for the sake of your coworkers. This occurs when a consumer becomes severely delinquent on a debt. chart of accounts A created list of the accounts used by a business entity to define each class of items for which money or the equivalent is spent or received. commission the act of committing or giving in charge conservatism The belief that business systems should follow a safe approach to business practices. contract An  agreement between two or more parties to do or not do something specified. credit The deduction of a payment made by a debtor from an amount due. current assets Any asset expected to last or be in use for less than one year. current liabilities Obligations such as deferred dividend, trade credit, and unpaid taxes, arising in the normal course of a business and due for payment within a year. customer A party that receives or consumes products (goods or services) and has the ability to choose between different products and suppliers. debt Something, typically money, that is owed or due. debtor A company or individual that owes a sum of money. deferred revenue Revenue that is considered a liability until it becomes relevant to the business at hand, such as a payment received for work that has not yet been performed. discount A deduction from the usual cost of something. doubtful account Name given to an account that records the sums (accounts) whose collection looks uncertain. Such accounts are termed bad debts and are usually written off against the profit of the firm as expense. down payment An initial payment made when something is bought on credit. employer A person or business that employs one or more people, especially for wages. equity Total assets minus total liabilities; also called net worth or book value. expenditure The act of expending something, especially funds; disbursement; consumption. federal Pertaining to or of the nature of a union of states under a central government distinct from the individual governments of the separate states. finance The management of revenues; the conduct or transaction of money matters. financial statement A document showing credits and debits. fixed costs A periodic cost that remains more or less unchanged irrespective of the output level or sales revenue, such as depreciation, insurance, interest, rent, salaries and wages. free cash flow The amount of cash that a company has left over after it has paid all of its expenses, including investments. functional currency Currency of the country (called the primary environment ) in which a firm conducts its business activities and generates most or all of its income and expenses. goodwill An intangible asset that arises as a result of the acquisition of one company by another for a premium value. gross income Receipts and gains from all sources less the cost of goods sold. Also called gross margin and gross profit. gross profit Sales minus all costs directly related to those sales, including manufacturing expenses, raw materials, labor, selling, marketing and other expenses. intangible asset Reputation, name recognition, and intellectual property such as knowledge and know how. interest A charge for a loan, usually a percentage of the amount loaned. interest expense The amount allocated for interest payments made by a company. investment The action or process of investing money for profit. leasehold improvement A physical improvement made to a facility by a lessee that enhances the value of the facility. liability An obligation that legally binds an individual or company to settle a debt. license Authorize the use, performance, or release of something. liquid assets Assets in the form of cash. liquidity The availability of liquid assets to a market or company. loan A sum of money borrowed and expected to be paid back with interest. loss The result of selling assets for a price lower than the original purchase price. margin The difference between a sale price and a cost. margin of safety An excess of a company’s actual sales revenue over the breakeven sales revenue, usually expressed as a percentage. mortgage A debt instrument that is secured by the collateral of specified real estate property and that the borrower is obliged to pay back with a predetermined set of payments. net earnings The total revenue in an accounting period minus all expenses during the same period. opening balance The new amount on their balance sheet after financial statements are completed. operating expense An expense incurred in carrying out an organizations day-to-day activities, but not directly associated with production. overdraft A loan arrangement under which a bank extends credit up to a maximum amount against which a current checking account customer can write checks or make withdrawals. pension A regular payment made during a persons retirement from an investment fund to which that person or their employer has contributed during their working life. periodic inventory system A system where a business calculates its inventory by physically counting items at end of each accounting period rather than updating inventory continuously. perpetual inventory system A system where a business updates the quantity and availability of its inventory on a continuous basis, after each purchase or sale. prime cost The direct cost of a commodity in terms of the materials and labor involved in its production, excluding fixed costs. profit A financial gain, especially the difference between the amount earned and the amount spent in buying, operating, or producing something. purchase Acquisition through the payment of money or its equivalent. real estate Property consisting of land or buildings. residual value Estimated scrap value of an asset at the end of its economic or useful life. retained earnings Profit generated by a company that is not distributed to shareholders as dividends but is either reinvested in the business or kept as reserve for specific objectives. return on net assets A measure of a companys financial performance, equal to net income divided by the sum of fixed assets and net working capital. running cost Money spent by a company for the purpose of managing the business and/or for operating machinery for use in the business. salary A fixed amount periodically paid to a person for regular work or services. share A unit of account for the capital or stock of a company. shareholder An owner of shares in a company. solvency The ability to meet maturing obligations as they come due. stock The capital raised by a business or corporation through the issue and subscription of shares. tangible asset Equipment, machinery, plant, property that has long-term physical existence or is acquired for use in the operations of the business and not for sale to customers. tax A compulsory contribution to state revenue, levied by the government on workers income and business profits or added to the cost of some goods, services, and transactions. transfer pricing The price that is assumed to have been charged by one part of a company for products and services it provides to another part of the same company, in order to calculate each divisions profit and loss separately. trial balance A statement of all the open debit and credit items in a double-entry ledger, made to test their equality. variable cost A periodic cost that varies in step with the output or the sales revenue of a company. Study Tips from Pope Benedict XVI BobbiM Mar 4, 2013 We all know that Pope Benedict XVI (aka, Joseph Ratzinger) recently resigned as the Pope of the Catholic Church. Apparently, the last Pope to resign was 600 years ago. The world went up in arms of hearing the news. All of that is interesting and all, but what I really cared about is this:  What can we learn about study habits and routines from Pope Benedict XVI? Are there actually study tips from Pope Benedict we can learn from? A Day in the Life of Pope Benedict XVI So what exactly does the Pope do all day? Im sure youve asked yourself this before; or maybe not. Regardless, its a good question or at least its a half interesting one. FYI: As an aside, Pope Benedict speaks several languages fluently including German, Italian, French, English, Spanish, Portuguese, Latin, Greek, and Hebrew. But, wait, theres a point to all of this. What if we can actually learn something about learning to study, learning how to learn, and something about self-discipline from the Popes daily schedule? Lets see. Heres his daily schedule as reported by Time Magazine: The Popes day begins at 7 a.m. with Mass; one hour later breakfast is served. At 9 a.m. the Pope goes into his private study, the one where he recites the Angelus prayer every Sunday, speaking from the window overlooking St. Peters Square. He does his work in the study, where another consecrated laywoman, Birgit, helps him in her role as secretary and typist â€" she can read Benedicts tiny handwriting better than anyone else. Following Birgit in the study is Gänswein, the Popes secretary, to discuss the days agenda. Typically, the Pontiff works until 11 a.m., when audiences, or meetings, begin. At 1:15 p.m. lunch is served, with the secretaries and the memores sitting at the table with Benedict. After a brief stroll in the roof garden, the Pope rests, to return to his private study at 4 p.m. He says the rosary and then resumes his work. After a prayer, dinner is served at 7:30 p.m., in time to watch the 8 p.m. newscast on RAI, the Italian state broadcaster. An hour later, the Pope says good night and retires, though he works some more before going to sleep. Lets glean some the nuggets that might help you frame your schedule for success. Study Tips from Pope Benedict The Pope wakes up early: This is key. When you attack your day by waking up, becoming alert and sensitive to the world around you, you senses can take in more information and you are sensitive to stimuli. This means you can learn better from lectures, books that you read, and also from experiments that you run. Pope Benedict Eats Breakfast: Crazy, I know, but part of attacking your day is to wake up to it and then arm yourself with the energy and nutrients you need to be successful. This means you should eat a healthy breakfast. The Pope Takes Time for Self Reflection: The Pope takes time to think, reflect, self evaluate, and to offer worship to God. Regardless of your religious affiliation, taking time to reflect and to think alone will help you be successful in your day. Pope Benedict is Social: Human interaction no, not through social media but actual human interaction, is critical to having a successful day. Humans are social creatures and sociality will help you in your study habits by sharpening your ability to take in outside stimuli. The Pope Rests: Pope Benedict XVI rests his mind and body during the day. This is important to regenerate yourself for the remainder of the day. Pope Benedict Works Hard: He does. Im not sure exactly what that work entails, but he works until 8 PM. That shows dedication and also self-discipline. The Pope Goes to Bed at a Decent Hour: As important as waking up early is to go to bed early. When you are able to close your eyes, turn off your brain, that gives your mind and body a chance to recover and to heal and sets you up for success the next day. Now, lets talk about you.
